 ~ THE TEN COMMANDMENTS ~

Are you a GOOD person? What constitutes being a good person? Why did God give us his commandments?

God gave us his commandments as an aid or guidance for our lives. He promises us to keep us under the shadow of his wings when we keep his commandments, in addition His blessings come with our obedience. PSALMS 91:1-3,9-10 DEUT.28:1-14

EXODUS 20:3-17

  1. Thou shall have NO OTHER GODS, before me.

  2. Thou shall not make any GRAVEN IMAGES, NOR BOW BEFORE them.

  3. Thou shall not take the NAME OF GOD IN VAIN.

  4. Thou shall keep the SABBATH HOLY.

  5. Honor thy FATHER and MOTHER so you may live long...

  6. Thou shall not KILL.

  7. Thou shall not commit ADULTERY.

  8. Thou shall not STEAL.

  9. Thou shall not bare false witness (LIE).

  10. Thou shall not COVET.

There are two types of Sins, Sins of Commission and Sins of Omission.

What do all of these commandments mean exactly?

3 ￿You shall have NO other gods before me.

Other Gods would be anything that takes precedence over God. It could be anything ranging from our family, spouse, kids, work, hobby, careers, religions, goals, assets, investments, pride, image, our self, our reputation, our Money, fame, our life, etc￿ ARE WE WILLING TO DIE FOR GOD??? OUR LIVES SHOULD REVOLVE AROUND GOD AND NOT GOD AROUND OUR LIVES!!!

 4 You shall NOT make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

Images such as Angels, Jesus, Saints, Stars, Moon, Sun, Animals, etc... God refuses to be made by human hands.

5 You shall NOT bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

Someone who is jealous will not put up with having anyone between you and HIM. To worship something or someone is to have them in priority over God, this could be our Religion, reputation, kids, family, etc￿

6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Someone who loves God WILL keep His commandments, and will obey His voice.

 7 You shall NOT misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

We can not swear in His name just so that someone can believe in our word or in our promises.

8 Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,

10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall NOT do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns.

11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Dedicate one day of the week for God, Sabbath used to be Saturday in the old testament. But now a days the Sabbath can be Sunday. As long as we rest one day a week for health reasons, and dedicate it to HIM (John 7:24)

 12 Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

Besides obeying and listening to our parents, in addition we need to take care of them physically as well as financially, when they are of age.  The only time we don't have to obey them is when they tell us to do something contrary to the Bible.

 13 You shall NOT murder.

Murder does not mean self-defense, however, life is very precious to God even the life of a wicked person is important to God. Once someone dies, the chance for salvation ends. And God doesn￿t want any one to die before we are saved. JOHN 3:16 For God so loved the world (this includes the wicked) that HE has given his only begotten SON, so that who so ever should believe in him will not perish, but have everlasting life.

 14 You shall NOT commit adultery.

This doesn't just mean not to have sexual intercourse with someone we are not married to, even if everyone else is! In addition, desiring someone else￿s spouse would be equivalent to committing adultery. You can￿t even flirt with anyone, or lust over them. Don￿t flirt with married people, it gives them hope for a new relationship specially people in bad marriages. In addition, there is the transferring of spirits (Gen. 34:4)

bullet AVOID PHYSICAL CONTACT WITH THE OPPOSITE SEX OR SAME SEX in order to avoid the transferring of spirits...(GEN. 34:4)

 15 You shall NOT steal.

We loose faith in God when we steal. And without faith it is impossible to please God (Heb. 11:6) This also means not to take more than what is necessary when things are for free. Don￿t use more than one coupon when it specifies that only one coupon per customer is accepted. Don￿t lie about your age in order to qualify for a discount￿ When we steal from someone we are stealing from God. The Bible says that Everything belongs to God (Psalm 50:12 Mine is the world and everything in it. Malachi 3:8-9 ￿Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. ￿But you ask, ￿How are we robbing you?￿ ￿In tithes and offerings. 9 You are under a curse￿your whole nation￿because you are robbing me.

 16 You shall NOT give false testimony against your neighbor.

Do not stretch the truth or say a half truth, this is also considered a lie. How many times do people need to lie to become a liar? ￿ONCE! (Proverbs 6:16 God hates a lying tongue) The only time we can lie is to save a life. Even a little lie can bring us enormous consequences. The Commandments were created to protect us and make our lives safer.

 17 You shall NOT covet your neighbor￿s house. You shall NOT covet your neighbor￿s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.￿

To covet what someone else has, makes us ungrateful to God for the blessings He has given us, and lets HIM know that we are not happy with what HE has blessed us with. And we are accusing HIM of not being fair. God will not give us something that will compromise our salvation. If being wealthy will turn us into arrogant, proud individuals, then He will keep us poor, cripple, blind, or mute, in order to keep us under His GRACE.

SIN is disobedience to God. Many of us are familiar with the ten commandments above, but in reality the Bible mentions an additional 603 commandments for a grand total of 613. Many of us don't even know them. The Bible says that only (God is good PSALM 100:3) (ROMANS 3:23 For they all have sinned and fall short from the glory of God.). To be good means not to disobey God. Adam and Eve, never killed, stole, lied, fornicated, etc... they simply disobeyed and ate from the fruit God forbade them. Now answer the question asked in the beginning of this study... ARE YOU A GOOD PERSON???  ...NO HUH, NEITHER AM I !!!

If we could be able to keep all of the commandments in order to be saved by our own efforts, then JESUS' sacrifice wouldn't have been necessary. JOHN 3:16 For God so loved the world that HE gave his only begotten SON, so that who so ever should believe in him will not perish, but have everlasting life... We don't keep God's commandments in order for us to get saved, however we keep them in gratitude that JESUS CHRIST, gave His life for us. in addition, we Keep them to show God that we love Him.  JUAN 14:15 "If you love me you will keep my commandments".

WHAT CAN WE DO IN ORDER NOT TO SIN?

Job gives us the following advice; JOB 31:1 ￿I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.". We should make a pact with ourselves, NOT TO SIN! We need to program our brains, not to place God in second place; never to give honor to anything else before God; never to swear in the name of God in vain; to dedicate one day a week to God and rest from work; honor our parents; never to kill (this includes abortion); not to commit adultery, steal, lie or covet our neighbor!

bullet AVOID PHYSICAL CONTACT WITH THE OPPOSITE SEX OR SAME SEX (HOMOSEXUALS)... SPECIALLY IF NO ONE IS AROUND.
LIVING A HOLY LIFE (1 PETER 1:13-16)

13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: ￿Be holy, because I am holy.￿

CONCLUSION:

SIN will be sin regardless of how many are practicing it. Some people believe that homosexuals are bigger sinner than adulterers, or murderers worst than those who commit abortion. But to God SIN is SIN, regardless which one is the most popular among humans. JAMES 2:10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it!
